The EPRG guidelines define in Tier 2 defect limits (7 X W.T. long by max. 3,O mm (0,118
in) deep), which exceed the workmanship defect acceptance criteria. Since Tier 2 had been validated
for welds wiihout misalignment (hi-lo), experimental work was needed to establish an
upper limit for the hi-10, below which the Tier 2 defect limits are still applicable. Also the issue of
non-destructive (NDT) inspection of pipeline welds by automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) needs
further development and verification work.
To elucidate these, the EPRG Sub-Committee 'Weld Defects' has perforrned a verification
Programme consisting of full-scale bend and wide plate tensile tests on girth welds in 762 mm
(30 in) pipes. The approach and most highlighting results are described in the Paper. The work
has demonstrated that, with a joint misalignment of 2,5 mm (0,098 in) in 9,8 mm (0,385 in) wall
pipes, the Tier 2 defect limits are still applicable.
