| This paper presents a background to new defect guidelines for transmission pipeline girth welds, produced by British Gas and University of Gent, for consideration by the European Pipeline Research Group. The paper reviews the literature on the behaviour of girth weld defects and then presents fitness-for-purpose analyses to justify new defect limits.
