The paper outlines the technical basis for the recommended revisions of the current
“1996” EPRG-Tier 2 guidelines. The revisions include the extension of the guidelines to include
Grade L555 (X80) material and the assessment of surface-breaking defects with heights up to 5mm.
In addition, recommendations are made to improve the current interaction criteria for co-planar
defects in welds complying with the EPRG material and performance requirements. Finally, since
the weld strength mismatch is of major importance in establishing tolerable defect sizes, the paper
also defines the required level of weld metal yield strength for the safe application of the
guidelines.
