In 1983 the European Pipeline Research Group (EPRG) published minimum recommendations for shear fracture arrest toughness for gas transmission pipelines of grade not exceeding API 5L X70 (EN 10208-2, L480) and in 1993[2] extended the recommendations to API 5L X80 (EN 10208-2, L550) grade steel. This paper describes an evaluation of the safety embodied in the EPRG recommendations.
The relationship between the EPRG minimum toughness recommendations (measured by Charpy V notch energies) and the toughness distribution of the actual supplied pipe was investigated. This relationship was utilised to evaluate the probability of a shear fracture propagating for a given number of pipe lengths in a pipe supply purchased to EPRG minimum toughness recommendations.
In modern pipe production, average pipe toughness values generally exceed the EPRG minimum recommended toughness levels by a large margin. Consequently there is a very low probability of a long propagating fracture in modern linepipe purchased to the EPRG recommendations.
