The complex interaction between mechanical, metallurgical and environmental factors
which is typical of H2S-induced damage (HIC, HSCC) in pipelines for sour service
has to be properly evaiuated by well-design full-scale pressure tests.
In an extensive previous research programme by EPRG it was shown that standard
laboratory tests are either highly conservative or poorly correlated in compkson to
full-scale pressure test, as far as HIC and HSCC in the pipe body is concemed.
On the other hand, the possibility of HSCC damage in the seam weld is to be
carefully assessed, taking also into account the effects of local residual Stresses in the
weld region coming from the manufacturing process. This paper presents the early
results of an extensive programme especially devoted to this important item.
