In the present paper issues of pipeline design are discussed based on the findings of a recent research
work. Specifically, mechanical aspects of ultimate limit state modeling are analyzed with respect
to high grade pipeline steels and high usage factors.
Criteria for limit state stress calculation and burst pressure representation are treated and their applicability
and accuracy checked by experimental evidence. Besides, various definitions characterizing
the state of yielding of pipes are investigated. Conclusions are drawn by comparing predicted yield
pressures and test results.
